Ask The Margarita Man...
- by Austin's Margarita
Man, Mike Laymon:
Question: "What is the historical significance of
September 16?"
Answer: Diez y
Seis de Septiembre, also known as "Mexican Independence Day" dates back to September 16, 1810 when impoverished
peasants of Mexico, declared their independence from Spain. On that
morning, Mexican forces set out to defend their freedom, marching behind two
flags one featuring La Virgin de Guadalupe, Mexico's patron saint and the other
flag bearing the colors red, white, and green which is still Mexico's flag
colors. For Hispanics of Mexican descent, the date provides an opportunity
to celebrate their rich culture and heritage. So, on September 16,
toast Mexican Independence with a frozen margarita!
