Question: "Why do I get "brain freeze" when I drink frozen
drinks?"
Answer: Well, the good news is that "brain freeze" pain is
experienced by only about 30% of the general population. The pain is
triggered when the frozen drink (or other cold foods/drinks) crosses your palate
(the roof of your mouth). The cold temperature can set off certain nerves
that control how much blood flows to your head, causing them to quickly swell
up, causing the pain. The pain is usually delayed about 20 seconds before
you feel it and it's over in a few seconds in most cases. How can you
"lick" this problem? Possible remedies include drinking more slowly,
drinking warm water, warming the drink up in the front of your mouth before
swallowing, or you may be able to slow it down by holding your tongue up against
your palate to warm it. Or just wait it out!
