A Surprising Fact About
Margaritas
- from Mike Laymon, Austin's Margarita Man:
There is a common
misconception about the celebration of "Cinco de Mayo" as "Mexican Independence
Day" (see
our May newsletter for that story). The tradition of the Diez y
Seis de Septiembre festival dates back to September 16, 1810 when impoverished
peasants of Mexico, declared their independence from Spain. On that
morning, Mexican forces set out to defend their freedom, marching behind two
flags one featuring La Virgin de Guadalupe, Mexico's patron saint and the other
flag bearing the colors red, white, and green which is still Mexico's flag
colors. For Hispanics of Mexican descent, the date provides an opportunity
to celebrate their rich culture and heritage. So, on September 16,
celebrate Mexican Independence with a frozen margarita! |
